Ice Like Fire is the sequel to Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch. In Snow Like Ashes, we were introduced to a bunch of very well written characters and a great plot. In Ice Like Fire we continue on their journey. Meira and Theron are two of my favourite book characters and I was so excited to finally get my hands on this book!
“Five enemies. Five dented helmets sit lopsided over five equally dented breastplates; five black suns shine, scratched yet distinct, on the silver metal. More soldiers than I could ever take on m own, but as I stand in the center of their ring, boots planted in the snow, I cock an eyebrow at the closest one, the calm that precedes a fight descending over me.”
Winter’s debt to Cordell forces them to dig into their mines when they find lost chasm of magic. Desperate to keep her people safe, Meira goes on a journey to gain support to keep the chasm closed, even if it’s against Cordell’s wishes. Meanwhile, Mather takes Winter’s security in his own hands.
I read Snow Like Ashes at the end of last year and unfortunately I had to wait a while to get Ice Like Fire. I was so excited to continue reading the trilogy and very happy to find it was just as good as Snow Like Ashes! The story was really unpredictable. Every time something new happened I was like “Woah!” And then later “Where the hell is this going?!” At one point I was so into the story that I didn’t even notice when my mom said good morning to me three times!
I love Meira. I love how she’s this warrior and queen and I love how she always puts her Kingdom – her people – first. At the same time, she won’t go all crazy and sacrifice herself, mainly because. “I don’t have to die for my kingdom.” God, I love her for that. Some heroes (Yeah! I’m calling her a heroin! Because she is one!) are all for sacrifice and Meira is definitely not. I never really cared much for Mather, if I’m honest. At first I was bit confused as to why half of the book was written from his perspective. In the end it all made sense, and I actually started liking him better as the story went forward.
And Theron. Oh my dear Theron. He deserves his own paragraph. Because I love him. So much. I had some serious twisted emotions when it came to his character. I both loved and hated him and the big reveal at the end made my heart shatter. I was not expecting it at all. The end was big and spectacular and crazy and so good! Gah! I don’t have the words. I do have to admit I really missed some chapters from his perspective. It would’ve been so much fun to be able to read about what was going on in his head. Personally, I think I would’ve liked it more if half the book was written from Theron’s perspective instead of Mather’s, but in the end I’m glad it wasn’t.
Something that annoyed me a bit was that I felt like I was missing out on important parts of the story. I had the same thing with Snow Like Ashes, it wasn’t as annoying or confusing this time but I had to read some parts twice sometimes. I have to admit, my excitement makes me read really fast sometimes, add that to my crappy-ish English and well, things get a bit confusing. The confusing bits weren’t big, though. Usually it was just a line or two with important information about the story that my weird brain couldn’t process! All I had to do was reread a bit and I’d be back on track.
My review of Ice Like Fire can be found on Goodreads.
Ice Like Fire was amazing. The plot is interesting and unpredictable and the same goes for the characters. I cannot wait to read Frost Like Night!
