If you’re looking for a story that’s as beautiful as the cover of the book, I suggest you go get yourself a copy of Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray. It’s book two in the Firebird trilogy. I waited for this book for almost a year and it was definitely worth the wait. Here’s my spoiler free review!
“The first time I traveled to another dimension, I intended to take a life. Now I’m trying to save one. But I can’t do that unless I save myself. At the moment, I’m running through the winding streets of a near-medieval Rome, trying not to get burned at the stake. Welcome to the nonstop fun of traveling through alternate universes.”
In Ten Thousand Skies Above You, main character Marguerite Caine is on a mission to reunite the splintered pieces of her boyfriend Paul’s soul. To do so, she has to work for her enemy Wyatt Conley and travel to multiple dimensions. This leads her to a war-torn San Fransisco, New York’s criminal underworld and a lovely Paris, where another version of herself keeps a dangerous secret.
The start of Ten Thousand Skies Above You is quite like the start of A Thousand Pieces Of You. We dive straight into the action and then get “flashbacks” of the events which happened before the action started. I really like this kind of writing, because if we were to put the flashbacks before the events at the beginning of the book, I think we’d get quite the boring buildup. The flashbacks are actually some of my favourite parts of the book, so they’re not bad at all! What I mean to say is that the flashbacks are more interesting when we read them in the middle of an action packed event. And this book is full of action.
I love the story, but even after reading it twice, I still can’t really relate to the main character Marguerite. Although I love her as a character, I’m not like “Oh, yeah, hey, that makes sense. I completely get it.” I love her relationship with Paul and that she’s saving him no matter what she has to do. But a lot of times, I don’t understand her choices. Her behaviour just annoys me so much sometimes! I think that’s also kind of a good thing. Like I care so much about her I don’t want her to do stupid things!
The return of some characters from A Thousand Pieces Of You give Ten Thousand Skies Above You a familiar touch. I think that’s really important with a book like this because there’s only a small group of main characters and all the dimensions are so new that there are not many familiarities left. I do like that everything is so new, but since it’s a part of a trilogy, I just need something familiar, hehe!
The plot was interesting, action packed and it had some awfully good plot twist! I was rereading the book and I was like “Wait, did that happen the first time I read it?!” And sometimes I didn’t even know where the story was going at all! Which is quite rare for when I rereading a book. The end left me shocked for the second time in half a year! It’s probably one of the best book cliffhangers ever.
My review of Ten Thousand Skies Above You including spoilers and my favourite part of the book can be found on Goodreads.
Ten Thousand Skies Above You is an amazing read. It’s definitely a worthy sequel to A Thousand Pieces of You! I absolutely cannot wait until A Million Worlds With You comes out in November!
