A Guide to The Shadowhunter Chronicles: Secondary Works

In this second part of my Shadowhunters Blog Series I walk you through all the secondary books in the series, like the Shadowhunter's Codex! My new blog series is all about the Shadowhunter Chronicles and in this second part, I’ll be talking all about the secondary works in the series! Some of these are very well known in the fandom, and easily found. Others are more of a “You only know them if you know literally everything.” Have no fear, though! Here’s an overview of all the secondary works in the Shadowhunter Chronicles.

Secondary works; novallas, short stories, bind ups, informative books, art books, etc. – Anything that relates to a book series, but you don’t necessarily have to read in order to follow the story.

The Shadowhunter’s Codex

Probably the most important secondary book to the series! All Shadowhunters have a Codex, it’s like their bible and most important school book! It has all kinds of handy information about runes, Downworlders, the actual Mortal Instruments, etc. If there’s anything you want to know about the Shadowhunters, you’ll find it in there. Also, it has lots of art and handwriting, because it’s supposed to be Clary’s copy!

The Bane Chronicles

The Bane Chronicles is a bind up of eleven short stories about Magnus Bane. Ten stories were originally published as separate ebooks, now they’re bound together in The Bane Chronicles plus there’s an eleventh story! There’s also a comic/manga-like illustration for each of the stories.

Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy

This bind up is to be released in November 2016. It’s like The Bane Chronicles, except it follows Simon! This book has ten stories, and each of the stories has a comic illustration! I’m not going to spoil what exactly it’s about, because it’s quite a big spoiler for City of Heavenly Fire. The stories are already released as separate short story ebooks, though. You could read them separately or wait for this bind up that’ll be released in November.

A History of Notable Shadowhunters & Denizens of Downworld Told in The Language of Flowers

This cute little book with the long ass title is a book told in the Language of Flowers. Each of Cassandra’s character have a flower assigned to them, with the meaning behind it plus a little paragraph about the character. The book is illustrated by Cassandra Jean, who’s also made the Shadowhunter Tarot deck. It’s basically a cute little fun book for anyone who’s really into the Shadowhunter Chronicles and wants more information about the characters.

As of right now it’s available on Topaco, which is US based. International shipping is available! The UK edition of this book will be available on November 3rd. Although if you can afford it, I’d recommend getting the US version from Topaco as it’s so much prettier!

Shadowhunters & Downworlders: A Mortal Instruments Reader

This Shadowhunters & Downworlders Reader is a collection of YA authors writing about the Shadowhunter Chronicles. Apparently, they are Essays. I’ve not read it so I honestly can’t say. A few of the contributing authors are Kami Garcia, Michelle Hodkin, Holly Black and Sarah Rees Brennan. Cassandra Clare has only provided introductions to the contributor’s writing and edited it. So it’s not written by Cassandra herself. The reader has information on the series, so it’s a little bit like the Codex, except in a different format.

Infernal Devices Graphic Novels & Novellas

The Infernal Devices was made into graphic novels! They’re officially called mangas, but they’re actually not! It’s a normal graphic novel, which you read from left to right Instead of right to left like an actual manga. It’s basically the Infernal Devices in graphic novel form. Obviously, some parts were left out because of the length.

Clockwork Angel | Clockwork Prince | Clockwork Princess – All good Goodreads!

While I was researching for this post, I stumbled upon two Infernal Devices extras! They’re called On The Bridge (0.5) (About Will & Jem) and After The Bridge (3.1) (About Jem & Tessa) Links will direct you to the stories! They’re online and super easy (and FREE!) to read.

City of Bones Graphic Novel

The entire reason I’m doing this series is because of this darn graphic novel! Alright, not entirely but it’s true for the most part. What exactly happened to this, I have no idea. But apparently, it exists. It was released in 2013 as an ebook/digital graphic novel, but I can’t find it anywhere. They must’ve deleted it or something. Some websites say it’s coming out soon, some say 2030… Haha, funny! All the information on this is so vague, I’m just going to direct you to this Wikia page, so you can read it for yourself.

There’s also some books from the movie adaptation and unofficial Shadowhunter books, but for the sake of the length of this post (and the amount of unofficial stuff that must be out there, I kept it to the official stuff!

Have you read any of these books? What’s your favourite? Do you think it’s a good thing that there’s so many books? Or would you rather not have all these books?
