The Dream Thieves is the sequel to Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys, and book two in the Raven Cycle Series! I went through a whole lot of struggling to actually get through the first bit of the novel, but it was so worth it! The Dream Thieves is incredible and the Raven Cycle is such an amazing series! I definitely recommend everyone to read this! (After you’ve read The Raven Boys, of course!) Here’s my review, I hope I can convince you to pick up the book!
“A secret is a strange thing. There are three kinds of secrets. One is the sort everyone knows about, the sort you need at least two people for. One to keep it. One to never know. The second is a harder kind of secret: one you keep from yourself. Every day, thousands of confessions are kept from their would-be confessors, none of these people knowing that their never-admitted secrets all boil down to the same three words: I am afraid.”
Gansey, the Raven Boys and Blue are still in search of Glendower, an ancient Welsh King. Except this time, we know Ronan can take things out of his dreams. And another thing; the ley line has been awakened….
The Dream Thieves started out as an incredibly difficult book. I started reading it, only read maybe a chapter or two and left it on my desk untouched for a couple of days. Then I remembered I had the exact same thing with The Raven Boys. So I picked it up, determined to get through that first difficult bit, and it was so good! It was beautifully written and I was so in love with it!
I absolutely loved the characters. It was so wonderful to see Blue and the boys together and every bit in the book with them all together was probably my favourite. I really like Blue for being such a feminist and I loved her relationship with Gansey! I didn’t really like Ronan in The Raven Boys, and I got even more annoyed with him through the Dream Thieves! And I kinda hated the Gray Man. I disliked him. So much. But in the end, I loved them both! I gotta admit I didn’t really like the adults in the book,
I mean, so unresponsible and childish! but I have to admit they’re probably still my favourite adult YA characters. Also, I have to mention I still have no clue what Gavinsky’s deal was, and I don’t really know what to think of him…
The plot was great. There were a bunch of really great plot twists and fun moments! I actually had a few theories while reading the book and it’s fun how wrong I was every time! Because I mean you don’t want things to be predictable! It was the kind of plot that kept me on the edge of my seat and I just wanted more! I was only about halfway through when I loved it so much that I just randomly ordered Blue Lily, Lily Blue! There were a few things that I didn’t like all that much about it, though. Like using drugs and alcohol in an abusive way. I got kinda pissed about it. But then it was made up by the feminism talk, the “no is no” thing, and this certain person saying “Wait, I changed my mind!” after taking drugs. Because HECK YEAH! You deserve it! Also, I kind of mentioned this already but this relationship between Blue and Gansey was honestly my favourite part of the plot.
My review of The Dream Thieves including spoilers and my favourite part of the book can be found on Goodreads. I really recommend you check it out, because that’s where the fun stuff’s at!
4/5 rating because of the incredibly difficult start but the most amazing other parts of the book. I’m so in love with this series and I just cannot wait to see where this is going!
