Waiting on Wednesday: The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Since I’ve either already talked about my most anticipated releases of this year or they have been released by now, I thought I’d start with my anticipated 2018 releases! The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert is a YA Fantasy to be released in January and I cannot wait to read it! With its pitch-dark fairytales and cruel supernatural world, this seems to be right up my alley! Here’s why I cannot wait for the release of The Hazel Wood.

Waiting on Wednesday is Hosted by Breaking The Spine.

“Pitch-dark Fairytales”

I am obsessed with fairytales. Actually, I have to admit I’m mostly obsessed with retellings, but this just sounds so exciting! The most exciting part is probably that they’re apparently “pitch-dark”, isn’t that just THE BEST?! I’m really all for darkness in books, it’s my all time favourite thing. That combined with fairytales?! SOMEONE WIPE ME OFF THE FLOOR!

Grandmothers!

I’ve never realised this before, but doesn’t YA just lack of grandmother or grandfather characters? I can remember one from all the books I’ve read this year which just seems crazy! Alice’s/the main character’s grandmother has an important role in this story and I cannot wait for it. Also, said grandmother is a fairytale author with a cult-like following… Who’s grandmother is cool like that?! Not mine, for sure…

Classmate AND Cult Member?

Whenever I see the cover and read the first part of the synopsis, I immediately think of a high fantasy story. But then suddenly, there’s the classmate. Say what?! That’s not as high fantasy as I thought I’d be… But I love it! And he’s also basically a cult member? Oh goodness, does anyone remember that TV show The Following? It was basically about a Cult. And It was very messed up. This is going to be so dark and I just NEED IT NOW!!!*

*Actually, I needed it yesterday. Or a month ago, when I first wrote this post.

Family Estate & Cruel Supernatural World

Okay, so the synopsis doesn’t specifically say it’s a family estate. But it gives me that kind of vibe. And granny is family so… I guess it is!? Anyway, I don’t think it’s like a haunted house, but “estate” sounds so grand and epic! I’m pretty sure it is… And there’s a cruel supernatural world called Hinterland where all of these fairytales take place?! OH MY, take me there!

THAT GORGEOUS COVER THOUGH!

Guys, I try. I really, really try not to use “cover” in all of my Waiting on Wednesday posts. But I always fail miserably. But really though, how can you not mention a gorgeous cover?! It’s black, gold and silver and I wouldn’t be surprised if the gold and silver would be like all shiny and stuff on the final cover! The illustrations are so wonderful and teasing as well! I mean, there seems to be a city, and a house, and obviously it has a fairytale vibe! Oh my goodness, you guys! Someone get me an ARC!

About The Hazel Wood

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away—by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set. Alice’s only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began—and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.
