Waiting on Wednesday: Bruja Born by Zoraida Córdova

It’s been a little while since I did a Waiting on Wednesday post, so I’m really excited to share this one with you guys today! Bruja Born by Zoraida Córdova is a sequel/companion novel to Labyrinth Lost and it’s gloriously witchy! Want to know why I’m so excited about the release of this book? Keep on reading!

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking The Spine.

Incredibly Gorgeous Cover

Ugh. I vowed to myself to never use a cover a reason for my excitement but HAVE YOU SEEN THIS COVER!? I can’t even be upset over this mid-series cover change, really. I feel like it’s such a fitting cover as well if Labyrinth Lost is any indication of how Bruja Born is going to be. I’m hoping the gold(-ish?) on the cover will be foil. Wouldn’t that be stunning?

Companion Novel

Bruja Born isn’t exactly a sequel to Labyrinth Lost, but more of a companion novel taking place eight months after what happened in LL. I love this so much because I feel like I’ll be able to read this book as sort of a standalone, and I don’t have to reread any books to understand what’s happening. I hope! It’s not that I didn’t like the first book in the series, I just don’t really like having to reread a book because I forgot the details. Does that make sense? There are too many books left unread to spend all my time rereading!

Sisters

Like I said, Bruja Born is more of a companion novel, and it follows Alex’s sister Lula. I don’t remember all that much about her from LL, but I love sibling relationships in books. There’s just something about it that I really love. Maybe that’s because I have a sibling myself? Anyway, I’m really excited to read from Lula’s perspective. I think Alex will be in the book as well and I’m so excited to see what she’s up to!

Necromancy?!

Lula’s classmates and her boyfriend die in a car crash and since she’s a healer, she’s determined to bring him back to life. What I can gather from the synopsis, though, is that this doesn’t really go according to plan! Lula used dangerous magic which feels like some sort of necromancy to me, and I LOVE IT! I need more necromancy books in my life ASAP.

Maps

I have a thing for maps. Whenever there’s a map in a book, I’ll be studying it for AGES. I found a map of El Brooklyn de las Brujas map on Sourcebook Fire’s website and it’s just so cool! AND IT’S IN COLOUR. Probably online only, though, but still. I’ve already spent way too much time looking at it, and I haven’t even read the book yet! There are all these things on it like “Lula’s Circle,” “Knights of Lavant” and “Angela’s Bakery.” It sounds so exciting!

About Bruja Born

Three sisters. One spell. Countless dead.

Lula Mortiz feels like an outsider. Her sister’s newfound Encantrix powers have wounded her in ways that Lula’s bruja healing powers can’t fix, and she longs for the comfort her family once brought her. Thank the Deos for Maks, her sweet, steady boyfriend who sees the beauty within her and brings light to her life.

Then a bus crash turns Lula’s world upside down. Her classmates are all dead, including Maks. But Lula was born to heal, to fix. She can bring Maks back, even if it means seeking help from her sisters and defying Death herself. But magic that defies the laws of the deos is dangerous. Unpredictable. And when the dust settles, Maks isn’t the only one who’s been brought back…
